Tuscaloosa, Ala. - As COVID 19 has spread across not only the United States but the world, sports have stopped altogether. The University of Alabama men’s club lacrosse team has entered its third week of no practices or games.
Bama would have played its seventh game of the season yesterday, against Ole Miss, and its eighth game against LSU today, April 4. Instead, players have quarantined themselves in their homes and apartments trying to prevent the virus from spreading and wishing they could have finished their season.
The Crimson Tide only played four out of the nine games scheduled for the 2020 season. Of these four games, Bama came out with a 2-2 record. The team’s losses happened on the road and were the first two games of the season. These defeats were against Clemson (4-12) and South Carolina (8-12). Bama’s final two games resulted in wins against Georgia (9-8) and Mississippi State (16-6). The Crimson Tide had never beaten the Georgia Bulldogs before this year, turning over a new leaf for the team this season. These victories showed a promising future for Bama.
Throughout these games, there were a couple of key players both offensively and defensively. The top five scorers included:
#43 William Gardner- 8 goals
#44 Hayden Adamson- 5 goals
#6 Thomas Harding- 3 goals
#23 Aaron Cargas- 3 goals
#37 Alex Hird- 2 goals
These numbers do not include the Mississippi State game, which was considered a scrimmage. Other notable players with promising statistics included:
#44 Hayden Adamson- 6 ground balls
#1 Robert Zahralban- 4 ground balls
#28 Ty Brazeal- 4 ground balls
#6 Thomas Harding- 2 assists
#42 Bryce Smith- 2 assists
#46 Patrick Cullen- 11 face-off wins
#41 Jake Long- 5 face-off wins
#16 Justin Alexandre- 80 saves
While some of these numbers are small, these leading player’s statistics only consisted of three games. If these players were able to finish the season who knows what would be possible for them and the Bama team as a whole. The MCLA has marked April 6 as the date to decide whether to let teams finish their seasons or not. The association has already chosen to cancel the National Championship but will decide about conference championships on Monday.
